Carlyle Group to buy Getty Images

Yesterday was announced that The Carlyle Group and Getty Images Management will acquire Getty Images from Hellman and Friedman in a transaction valuing target to 3.3 bn USD (including debt). Carlyle Group will acquire a controlling stake (reportedly slightly above 50%), remaining shares are held by Co-Founder and Chairman Mark Getty, his family and management (also involved in pending transaction). The buyout fund Carlyle Partners V managing assets totaling 13.7 bn USD will provide equity financing for the investment.

Dreamstime introduced new pricing structure

By the end of April Dreamstime introduced new pricing structure: updated levels (categories of products) and new royalties. Pricing of products in individual categories (in credits) remains unchanged. 

Update of levels means that almost all files were shifted up by 1 level. There are only 3 exceptions: (1) new files that didn’t sell for more than 24 months remain level 0, (2) existent files that didn’t sell for more than 24 months are allocated to level 0 and (3) products with more than 50 downloads remain in level 5. Price comparison of 6 top microstock agencies

Microstock statistics and stock photo price comparisonPricing policies of key microstock players have changed significantly since my original calculations. Therefore, I updated comparison of main microstock sites based on their most popular unit sales and subscription programs (detailed overview in "DESIGNERS" tab). Two additional microstock agencies, Depositphotos and 123RF, were included, because they become more and more popular, their database of products is competitive and prices attractive.

How the top sites compete by prices to each other is shown in updated tables below. Comparison with original strategies indicates that microstock agencies now pay more attention to subscription plans and try to provide more options to customers. Nevertheless, designers should  .....

Surprisingly strong earnings on Depositphotos

Depositphotos is young microstock agency that started operations in 2009 and has experienced dynamic growth since its foundation. Rich database of more than 4 million photos and illustration was built very quickly, thanks primarily to surprisingly generous promotion program and focus on top contributors with large portfolios. Depositphotos likely performs well also on the sale side, with acquisition of new clients significantly above industry standards.

In September 2011, my earnings on Depositphotos were surprisingly very strong. Two of TOP 4 agencies, Fotolia and Dreamstime, finished the month statistics significantly behind and Shutterstock was the only agency with higher earnings (I do not upload on iStockphoto). Though .....
