Fotolia - for buyers:

  • Payment plans: Fotolia belongs to wide group of microstock agencies that are based on credit system: designers are buying credits that are used for download of photos and illustrations. Designers can choose between "Single Downloads" and "Subscriptions" payment and download plans. If he/she needs  photos on a regular basis, subscription plans are the right choice.
  • Subscriptions: Fotolia offers subscription plans for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. In addition, clients can adjust their plan based on the area of interest (only photos, vectors or video), how many downloads per day they require (from 25 till 250 downloads per day) and how many users is linked to one subscription plan (1, 3 or  unlimited). Exact financial terms of the subscription plan are based on all these inputs. Price per download starts at 0.16 USD and ends at 0.40 USD (standard license is assumed). In general, Fotolia´s competitive pricing policy and wide options to target subscription plans is one of the most flexible and competitive combinations in microstock world.
  • Single downloads: Designers are buying credits that are valid 1 year since date of their purchase. Utilization of these credits within this period is solely in discretion of the client. Price of 1 credit starts at 0.75 USD (if you buy large amount of credits) and can reach up to 1.20 USD (in case of purchase of 10 credits, what is minimum amount).
  • Prices: All prices are shown in credits. Price of photos in lowest resolution XS (0,12 MP, 72 DPI) starts at 1 credit, photos in highest resolution XXL (15 MB, 300 DPI) cost 10 credits. All vectors cost 4 credits, their complexity does not play a role. Also, comparison with other three top microstock agencies shows that Fotolia has good prices of extended licenses: photos start at 10 credits and vectors cost 40 credits.
  • Licenses: Fotolia offers 6 basic types of licenses. Both standard and extended licenses are divided into separate categories for vectors and subscription plans. For more information please go to description of available licenses on Fotolia web page.
  • Updates: It is unavoidable to make, from time to time, changes in subscription plans or prices and information provided on this web site might become outdated or inaccurate. Therefore, we recommend to check Fotolia Subscriptions Plans and Credits on company´s web page. Of course, I will be pleased if you enter Fotolia by clicking on some link on this web site before registration.

Fotolia - for contributors:

  • Entry Application: Fotolia has different policy than SS or iStock and does not require entry application of new contributors. Though contributors must past entry test (bullet points) it is not a difficult task and the form can be found answered on internet. Direct link to Sign-Up Page.
  • Exclusivity: Contributors have option to be exclusive with Fotolia, but this is not attractive and rarely used. This is because SS has higher revenue potential and iStock has, despite of recent changes in royalties, more attractive program for exclusive contributors. However, Fotolia offers also partial exclusivity for single products, which is commonly used (it does not restrict selling other products with different agencies).
  • Supported Products: Fotolia distributes photos, illustrations/vectors and video.
  • Editorial: Fotolia does not support sale of products with editorial license, you always need to have "model release" or "property release" when required.
  • Royalties: Designers earn credits, whereas price of 1 credit is 1 USD. Basic royalties amount to 20%-46% from the sale price, based on rank of contributor (the royalties structure was recently updated with minimal commissions falling from 25% to 20% of the sale price). Royalties for exclusive contributors range from 35% to 63% of the sale price. Sale price is affected by (1) type of license purchased and (2) exclusivity of contributor/product. All calculations of royalties and other information relate to USD-based Fotolia webpage only (see Currency below). More information about royalties.
  • Payout: Minimal payout level is 50 credits (= 50 USD). Minimal payout level is increased to 500 USD if wire transfer is necessary.
  • Payout Methods: PayPal and MoneyBookers. Wire transfer is an option for countries where these two agencies are not available. Minimal payout level for wire transfers is 500 credits as mentioned above and fees of such transfer amounts to 50 credits.
  • Photos: Minimal acceptable resolution of photos is 2400x1600 pixels, which equals to c. 4.0 MP. Highest size of photos is 30 MB.
  • Vectors: Fotolia says on its webpage that maximum size of vectors is 2 MB. In fact, Fotolia accepts significantly higher sizes, because it is very easy to exceed 2 MB limit with a complex vector illustration. Vectors can be uploaded in EPS or AI formats.
  • Vector Preview: The vector preview should have at least 5000x3000 pixels (15M pixels). Both preview of vector and vector itself must be uploaded in one zipped file.
  • Keywords: Upper limit for number of keywords is 50. Though Fotolia says on its webpage that keywords must consist of one word only, system accepts expressions consisting of more words too.
  • Database: Fotolia has some 11.5 JPG photos and illustrations in its database (April 2011).
  • Forms Of Upload: Fotolia offers upload via HTTP, FTP (very quick) and flask interfaces.
  • Referral Program: Fotolia calls it Affiliate and the program/credits relates to buyers/clients only (there are no referral fees for acquisition of new contributors). Registered users receive 15% of net earnings of microstock agency, or 20 USD in case of subscription, for each new client that purchased credits.
  • Upload Limit: There is no upper limit for number of photos/vectors that can be uploaded within a specific time period.
  • Currency: Upon registration contributors choose country zone that is set as primary. This country zone cannot be changed later and determinates if contributors receive fees in euros or dollars. According to independent sources it is financially better to register in euro-zone, but I am not able to confirm it.
  • Seat: New York, USA. Offices are also in Seattle and Paris.
